A giant pothole just past Fletcher Street in Goshen that resulted in
dozens of flat tires and misalignments on the Quickway today (April 12).
Thankfully there are no reports of serious injuries.... other than a lot of flat tires and some front end issues for today's Sunday drivers on their way to Middletown.
Estimates varied from of a few dozen drivers to over 100 found damages on vehicles today (April 12) when they encountered a very large pothole on the Quickway the hard way. This giant pothole sprung flat tires galore, wheel alignment issues and actual front end damage to some whose drivers kerplunked into this giant pavement hole on the Quickway between Fletcher Rd. and Middletown. Many were seen along the side of the road waiting for tow trucks. A temporary repair was made within a few hours, but permanent fixes will have to wait for a stretch of warm and dry weather. Drivers are complaining that between the extreme freezes and then warm-ups, plus salting to keep the roads safe, the highways are worse than they can remember.
They are calling on Governor Hochul to make sure these road issues have adequate funding to be be repaired before they result in serious injuries! Highway Departments, aware of the issue, held numerous news conferences in recent months emphasizing their dire need for $100M State CHIPS funding. It made the budget, but will it be enough for these monster holes? This sometimes results in local departments having to shelve some of the projects they had planned for, to keep up with other issues that need urgent attention. Perhaps it would help to take a clue from Blooming Grove which uses a newer mix which is claimed to do much less damage to road surfaces.
Remember the rule about keeping a car length apart for every 10 mph (i.e. 4 car lengths for 40 mph, 6 for 60). Heeding that rule can avoid very serious accidents in this kind of situation.
