NEWBURGH – The just-approved contract between the City of Newburgh and its police officers will place their salaries on par with those of other police departments in the Hudson Valley, Mayor Torrance Harvey says.
He has been vocal about the lower salaries in Newburgh resulting in other departments “poaching” their cops after the city has paid for their training. “You can’t have police officers starting at 45K in Newburgh and then across the river somewhere in Poughkeepsie they are starting off 65K or 68K or $70,000 so we were unfortunately being used as a training ground,” he said. That will be much improved in Newburgh once the new PBA contract takes effect in January
