Orange County and the Hudson Valley are still somewhat in shock over the loss of two of our favorite people this past month. Neithter were Olympic Competitors, or Devon Freestyle favorites. But, even better, they were what makes a real horsewoman - kindness, endless work and development of equestrian and all of the other skills to be a true animal caregiver and rescue expert. Both worked their hearts out for theirs and the animals they cared for's health and happiness. While many horsewomen are so busy balancing what it takes both physically, emotionally, and financially that they have little time for simple fun with friends, the love and respect they have for each other find a permanent place in our hearts. and we remember the moments shared over decades.
Selena Piazza was, as horse owners go, quiet, but it was always a quiet JOY! Everyone who knew her was aware of and impressed by her extreme dedication. Selena never did anything halfway.. And it mattered not whether her horse was a champion or a rescue, she would make him or her a star in their own right, and compete with style at levels that surprised everyone who watched their development. While I was boarding and working at a barn with her many years ago she had a large black horse named "Zorro". I sometimes helped with his turnout and such, and I'm here to tell you that "Zorro" could be a handful. Selena rode him beautifully thanks to her tact and understanding.... I think he understood her and decided it was worth behaving. In recent years Selena faced several devastating hardships, with loss of her husband Tom, with whom she adored every moment they shared, and her dogs, and her own health issues. But she had a new horse, Mya, that she poured her love and effort into. Gosh, weren't they absolutely stunning! And this mare continued to give her hope and joy (not to mention keeping her very busy). Of the increasing number of "ladies of advancing age" that I know, Selena, with her devotion to her church, choir, and the animals and people she cared for.... she knew her closest family was all waiting for her "across the rainbow bridge", I am at least happy that they will be reunited. Still, I am sad that in recent years we did not have a chance to rekindle our friendship other than via Facebook.

Horse of a lifetime, Mya, being classically and perfectly ridden by Selena
One thing you could be sure of... you would never see a
horse of Selena's being pulled behind the vertical.

No matter how long they were together it looked like a fun first date.

Selena always had time to contribute her beautiful voice at her congregation.

Diane Butler was known throughout the area for her partnership founding Squirrelwood Equine Rescue with Linda Giron. Whether it was an ex-racehorse, a huge Gypsy Vanner, a cow, puppy or pig, they were endlessly dedicated to making sure these animals have the absolute best life they could.
Not only did they rescue New York Area animals, their reach was, and STILL IS much farther, recently holding fundraisers and sending supplies to both North Carolina animal flood victims and rescuers in the Los Angeles area.
Please - Check out their Squirrelwood pages for information on how to donate to their current Valentine and other active Fundraisers. Without the help and support of Diane, Linda Giron will have her hands more than full, and we hope that the Orange County animal loving community will assist her in continuing their good work. Diane was also a Live Organ Donor and encouraged others to register as well. Diane and Linda both have had a way of making the most difficult of work into fun, and sometimes even "funny" (see Crouton and Poppy below) and their energy has vitalized hundreds of area residents and farm owners, many who had and hope to continue to have memorable visits to the farm.
Squirrelwood and the work it has done in recent years says a lot about the hearts of the Orange County Community. Let's step up the support for the care of animals and environment in need!
