Kathy Calhoun Stegenga
With a background in exposure to political know-how that goes back decades as daughter of Nancy Calhoun (State Assembly Minority Leader in 2010, Blooming Grove Councilwoman and then Supervisor 1985-90), Kathy Stegenga announced her candidacy for her THIRD term in Orange County Legislature District 21.
In a chat with the Courier Journal several weeks ago, Stegenga, a Republican, emphasized that; in general, many issues are bi-partisan, and that it's imperative for political parties to keep talking and finding middle ground. As a Legislator for District 21, she would, represent the Town of Blooming Grove, the Village of Washingtonville, Town of Hamptonburgh and the Village of Maybrook.
Stegenga has a record of intense involvement in local activities that support local businesses and events as well as charity organizations and the Chamber of Commerce. She holds a high priority on being accessible to her constituents, and said she talks with Blooming Grove Supervisor, Rob Jeroloman, every week. She is known to be outgoing and outspoken about her political positions and beliefs, but always with a smile and sometimes with a chuckle.

“Over my tenure in the Orange County Legislature, I have made it a priority to be very interactive within my communities and with the people that I represent,” she said. “I have set realistic goals that I have been able to achieve on behalf of my constituency.”
She lists among her accomplishments cost-cutting and responsible budgeting, advocating for affordable, senior and workforce housing, supporting SUNY Orange to expand and tailor its programs for the future business employment needs of the county.
No one else has announced an intent to run for District 21 Legislator.
