At Little Britain School, Students See How The Peace Corps Lives On, And Continues to do Good Work in Panama

Little Britain Elementary fifth grade teacher Christine Nimmo is teaming up with former student Stephanie Hince on a cross-cultural learning initiative known as The Panama Project.

Now serving in the Peace Corps, Ms. Hince is teaching environmental conservation at Escuela La Colorada de Los Santos in Panama. She recently reached out to Ms. Nimmo to launch a series of video calls between their classes.

Ahead of their first call, both groups prepared questions in each other’s native language, sparking conversations about school life, culture and daily routines.

Although students were initially shy, the conversation soon picked up.

“When we told them we had 450 students here, they were really shocked,” Ms. Nimmo said. The Panamanian students shared that their K-8 school has just one fifth grade class with 15 students.

From school uniforms to food and currency, the exchange gave students on both sides a unique opportunity to learn directly from peers around the world.

The Panama Project will continue throughout the school year, helping students gain global perspective while highlighting the importance of environmental stewardship.
